Eersterust elderly appreciated by men’s NGO

"The elderly tend to think that they are forgotten."

Members of the Men’s Ministry Foundation donated over 200 pairs of shoes to two old age homes in Eersterust on Sunday.

The all-male NGO was founded almost eight years ago with the aim of uplifting the Eersterust community.

Chairperson Curvin Hendricks said they chose the homes for the aged to show love to the elderly.

“We wanted to show them they are still part of our community and we still love them,” he said.

Hendricks said at times, the elderly tended to think they were forgotten.

“When we don’t visit them in the centres, they feel unloved and neglected,” he said.

The team spent time with the elderly at Lodewyk P. Spies Home, and with the help of the centre staff fitted the right size shoe to foot before treating the elderly to a braai.

Spokesperson Bradley Syster said: “We wanted to motivate our community to embrace the special message of Christmas. As this is an annual event many groups in the community joined us in celebration.”

Serr Synergy, Pick n Pay Eersterust, Pick n Pay Silverton, Eersterust Meat Traders, BP Eersterust and Eersterust Ministers Fraternal sponsored the event.

“Music was supplied by Enon Church led by pastor Eugene Oliphant and Nasaret United Reformed Church Brigade. People sang Carols by Candlelight to usher in the spirit of Christmas,” said Syster.

More than 200 people enjoyed the braai together.
