Khoi community occupy Union Buildings in protest for recognition

"They feel their rights have not been recognised."

The Khoisan community gathered at the Union Buildings on Friday to demand government to recognise them as the indigenous people of this country.

The march was led by the leader of the Congress of the People (Cope) Mosiua Lekota, who emphasised the need for acknowledgement of the Khoi-people.

“They feel that their rights have not been recognised. As a matter of fact, we held a view when we were still in government that something should be done to acknowledge them as the indigenous people of this land.”

Lekota said the Khoi community will have to be engaged on what they specifically want as a symbol of appreciation.

“They have to be engaged on that. What I know is that among other things they want was the inclusion of their language as an official language.”
