UPDATE: EFF pickets outside Israeli embassy in the east

The party said it supported the international call for a complete isolation of Israel and demanded "the ending of apartheid occupation of Palestine land."

Hundreds of EFF supporters gathered near the embassy of Israel in Lynnwood on Thursday to picket and express solidarity with Palestinian people’s struggle to be free.

EFF leaders, including Julius Malema, were expected to hand over a memorandum of demands to the Israeli ambassador.

Malema, who arrived at Lynnwood park where the marchers had gathered shortly before 12:00, was expected to address the crowd.

The party said it supported the international call for a complete isolation of Israel and demanded “the ending of apartheid occupation of Palestine land”.

“We support the call made in 2005 by Palestinian civil society that the international community must impose boycotts, divestments and sanctions on Israel until it complies with international law and universal principles of human rights,” EFF said in a statement.

This comes on the centenary anniversary of the Balfour declaration in which Britain declared its colonial project of creating a Jewish state in Palestine.

Police spokesperson Captain Augustinah Selepe said SAPS and Tshwane metro police were monitoring the situation closely.

The memorandum to be handed to the embassy demands the following:

– End Israel occupation and colonisation of all Palestinian lands and dismantle the apartheid wall.

– Recognise the fundamental rights of all Palestinian citizens.

– Respecting, protecting and promoting the rights of Palestinian refugees to return to their homes and properties as stipulated in UN resolution 194.
