Clean-up rids Sunnyside of crime

The clean-up also doubled as a crime-fighting operation as several arrests were also made.

Sunnyside police and residents cleaned parts of the inner city last week – in more ways than one.

The clean-up also doubled as a crime-fighting operation as several arrests were made.

Areas surrounding the Walker Spruit, Apies River and other crime hot spots were identified as problematic, according to said Arcadia City Improvement District (CID) manager Catherine Keyworth.

“We removed solid waste that was polluting these areas,” said Keyworth.

“These areas are often used as bases for criminal activities and by disrupting these zones we have interfered with the criminals’ capacity to commit a crime.”

Keyworth said about seven weapons were confiscated during the clean-up.

“Members of the Sunnyside police arrested people who were in possession of drugs,” she said.

A suspected stolen phone was also recovered.

“Drug equipment and other tools of criminal activities were confiscated and destroyed.”

Keyworth said it was inspiring to see so many people working during the heat of the day.

“With temperatures rising to approximately 34 degrees the young people didn’t stop to make their communities safer.”

The clean-up was organised by Arcadia city improvement district and staff members from Tshwane metro’s region 3, Forensic Security & Solutions, Interactive Cleaning, and immigration officers from the department of home affairs.

Keyworth said the operation was a huge success and was an example of what cooperation could achieve.

“If we come together as businesses, NGOs and government we can do a lot to help keep our spaces clean and crime-free,” she said.
