‘Lesbian rapist’ granted R2000 bail

It is reported that the alleged rapist was from one of the central African countries where same-sex relationships are considered to be an "abomination".

A man accused of raping a lesbian woman last month was granted R2 000 bail in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.

The accused, who appeared in court for the third time since he was charged for rape, was granted bail on condition he did not contact the woman.

The court heard that the accused was in the country legally.

The magistrate said the accused also had to report to the Sunnyside police station twice a week, on Mondays and Wednesdays.

The accused was informed that should the woman make any contact with him, he ought to report the matter to the police.

Police spokesperson Captain Daniel Mavimbela said the 25-year-old man was arrested in Sunnyside last month after a manhunt.

Mavimbela said the victim was a lesbian and the alleged rapist was from one of the central African countries where same-sex relationships are considered to be an “abomination”.

He said the victim (24) was visiting a friend where the suspect and the friend’s boyfriend were also present.

“It is reported that the alleged rape occurred after the couple [the friend and her boyfriend] left the flat to buy food,” said Mavimbela.

The accused is expected in the court again on 11 October, when a trial date would be set.
