Foundation celebrates outstanding PTA learners

The event featured a number of activities including soccer, spelling bee, drama and debate.

A gala dinner and sports day were hosted at Tyger Valley College, east of Pretoria, by the Mthwethwa Family Development Foundation (MFDF) last week.

The event featured a number of activities from soccer, spelling bee to drama and debate.

Foundation director Nokz Ndaba said the dinner which followed the sports activities, was meant to celebrate the work the “outstanding” learners adopted by the foundation had done this year.

Most of the children who benefit from the foundation’s programmes are from Pretoria schools.

“The MFDF this year looked to inspire both the adopted schools and audience at large,” said Ndaba.

The gala and sports day were established in 2012 as a means to show individuals and organisations what the foundation had done to impact the lives of learners.

“We do so positively. The foundation’s programmes include the spelling bee, read-a-thon, debating, poetry, drama, soccer and netball. All to encourage learners to interact in a positive manner with their curriculum as well as be motivated to attend school.”

Ndaba said the foundation offered holistic support to learners to develop well-rounded leaders.

She said the theme for this year’s gala was #BlackChildItsPossible.

“This was to show the contestants that you don’t have to have a lot of things in order to be great but you need to give your best to be the best,” said Ndaba.

The Bula-Dikgoro and Mkhomazi primary schools’ soccer teams went head to head.

“The day was full of excitement and great fun as we welcomed (footballer and freestyler) Ashley Mkhize to show-off some soccer skills. We also had players from TUT FC who played against Danville United.”

Motivational speaker and businessman Emmanuel Bonoko, Dario and Sheldon Spear spoke at the gala event.

“They spoke about how everything is possible if you put your mind to it,” said Ndaba.

“Each speaker started their own organisations to provide a helping hand to those in need, and they have done many things in their communities to help others.”.

Bula-Dikgoro won the soccer tournament, Mkhomazi netball, Nokuhle Nhlabathi primary the read-a-thon and Madzanga primary poetry.

“Sendrina Chihinga won the spelling bee while the debating and drama competitions was won by Nchuncheko and Motlhana primary school respectively.”

Ndaba said the awards for best school and best teacher went to Nchuncheko Primary school.

She said the event could not have been realised without the support of local business.

“Companies like Isibonelo Property Service, GD Irons, Tyger Valley College, CI Holdings, Hungry Lion, Joekels brands, Laager rooibos tea, Progress milling, Transit Ads, Need2Read, Sole2Sole, Soft Bev, Biggi brands and Penguin books helped us achieve this day,” said Ndaba.
