UPDATE: Montessori Association reacts to video storm at Brooklyn school

Pta school yet to lodge formal grievance following an incident at Brooklyn Montessori.

A formal complaint over alleged explicit videos at a Brooklyn school is still to be lodged with the SA Montessori Association (Sama).

The music videos were said to have been shown to children at the Brooklyn Montessori pre- and primary school.

Sama said on Thursday it had not yet received a formal grievance against the school from parents.

Learners were allegedly exposed to explicit music videos of various international pop artists, including Nicki Minaj, Justin Bieber and Rihanna, earlier this month.

Sama confirmed in a statement that the Brooklyn school was a member of the association at “initiate level”.

It said the primary school was also registered with the Gauteng department of education.

“A concerned parent notified Sama of the alleged incident but, as yet, has not lodged a formal grievance,” said the association.

“Sama will be following our own internal grievance procedure.”

Sama said it told the parent the nature of the allegations required that they be reported to the police.

“The parents advised that they had already done so.”

Brooklyn police spokesperson, Captain Colette Weilbach, confirmed a docket had been opened.

She said police were investigating to determine the nature of the content said to have been shown to the learners.

Gauteng department of education spokesperson Steve Mabona indicated the department was aware of the matter.

“The department will interact with the parent on necessary urgent intervention and provide assistance accordingly,” said Mabona.

School principal Estelle Freimond said the school had roped in a forensic child play therapist.

The therapist would investigate the potentially inappropriate visual content and its impact on the learners, she said.
