Rohingya protest turns violent

Protest action turns violent as protesters try to break into embassy's main entrance.

In the backdrop of the violence against Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar, large crowds of protesters
flocked to the Myanmar Embassy to hand over a memorandum in Arcadia on Friday afternoon.

The protest action which was meant to be peaceful turned violent, as the memorandum which was due
to be handed to a representative of the embassy was being read out, protesters tried to force entry into
the embassy by shaking the main gate.

With the crowd in distress and chaotic, police members who were monitoring the protest, tried to control the situation to no avail and reversed to tear gas and stun grenades to try and disperse the crowd from entering the embassy.

The demands protesters were relaying in their memorandum among others were; for the Myanmar
government to intervene and implement whatever measures necessary for the immediate end to
violence against Rohingya people.

They further called on the Myanmar government to take immediate responsibility and permit the independent United Nations fact-finding mission into Myanmar and the affected areas to investigate the allegations of mass rape, genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity and furthermore the investigations and arrests.

The memorandum also included a call for government to allow unhindered access of international
humanitarian aid, immediate medical care, implement measures for access to proper food security, clean
water and sanitation in affect areas.
