Affies girls do their part in the fight against cancer

“Most of the learners in the school know somebody with cancer.”

A Cansa Sprayathon was recently held at Afrikaanse Hoër Meisieskool.

The day was dedicated to staff members and learners who had been diagnosed with cancer.

Affies spokesperson, Colleen Naudé, said learners could either spray their hair, buy a cancer bandanna or donate some of their hair.

She said 72 learners cut their hair and donated it in support of Cansa.

“According to Cansa standards, hair must be at least 20 to 25cm long to donate,” said Naudé.

Affies head girl Leah Warmenhoven said cancer affected everyone.

“Most of the learners in the school know somebody with cancer,” said Warmenhoven.

She said cancer was not a fight anyone wanted to take on by themselves.

“Having a strong support system, in this case the school, I think can make a big difference during treatment.”

“Our message to people with cancer is we are thinking about you.”
