Gauteng women officers arrest 81 for sexual offences

A man allegedly linked to 20 sexual offences cases in Gauteng, Limpopo and KwaZulu-Natal was arrested.

 

The women in blue recently arrested 81 people for sexual offences in the province during Operation Basadi.

The police reported on their Facebook page that the operation had netted 314 arrests, 81 of which were for sexual offences.

A man allegedly linked to 20 sexual offences cases from 2011 in Gauteng, Limpopo and KwaZulu-Natal was arrested.

“These operations are supported by the Gauteng family violence, child protection and sexual offences units as part of a campaign to end the scourge of violence against women and children,” said the police.

“The operations started on 16 August and will continue throughout the month.”

The operations focused on stop and searches, roadblocks and the tracking of wanted criminals.

“Among the arrested, 228 were for assault, 24 for possession of drugs, 12 for driving under the influence of alcohol and nine for murder and a variety of crimes including possession of suspected stolen property, housebreaking and theft.”

Gauteng commissioner Lieutenant-General Deliwe De Lange praised the female police officers involved in the all-women operations for their hard work.

“Women from all law enforcement agencies are demonstrating their engagement and commitment to root out all forms of criminality,” said De Lange.

During the operations, the police seized 18 firearms.

Those arrested would appear in various magistrate’s courts soon.
