Brooklyn police lead crime prevention operation in the east

“It is not always about the number of arrests that are made but an operation is also regarded as successful when crime is prevented from happening."

A crime prevention operation was conducted by Brooklyn police in the east of Pretoria on Friday.

The operation was conducted by more than 90 Brooklyn officers along with Tshwane metro police and a number of security companies.

Police spokesperson Captain Colette Weilbach said the operation started in Waterkloof Ridge around 03:00.

She said vagrants sleeping in the open veld next to the N1 highway were searched.

“The Morpho Touch machine was used throughout the operation to check for any wanted suspects,” said Weilbach.

“More than 80 people were tested.”

The machine stores the profiles of wanted suspects and makes it easier for police to track them down.

Weilbach said the operation then moved to Nieuw Muckleneuk where a vacant house was searched for drugs.

“Crime hotspot areas were identified, including a high number of burglaries at residential areas, robberies and drug related crimes.”

She said a 23-year-old man, who had been on the run for more than a month, was arrested at 04:30.

“The suspect stole clothing worth R20 000 from his landlords in Newlands last month,” said Weilbach.

She said the man was expected to appear in the Hatfield Community Court soon on charges of theft.

Brooklyn station commander Brigadier Kushie Nair thanked all the role players who were part of the operation.

“It is not always about the number of arrests that are made but an operation is also regarded as successful when crime is prevented from happening,” said Nair.

“Police visibility is important to keep criminals at bay and to create safer communities.”

She said joint operations would be conducted throughout the year.
