Over 500 arrested for domestic abuse, sexual assault in Gauteng

Out of the 504 arrests made, 258 people were arrested for sexual assault.

More than 500 people were arrested on charges of domestic violence and sexual assault in November.

Gauteng police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said such cases were expected to increase due to activities associated with the festive season, such as alcohol abuse.

Dlamini said out of the 504 arrests made, 258 people were arrested for sexual assault.

He said these included acts of rape, exposing children to child pornography, abduction, sexual grooming of mentally disabled people and enticing to engage in sexual activity.

Dlamini said arrests made for domestic violence included contravening a domestic violence protection order, publishing information disclosing the parties of domestic violence proceedings, and abuse and deliberate neglect of children.

Dlamini appealed to residents to report any form of domestic violence.

He said domestic violence often led to more serious and violent crimes including rape, assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, attempted murder and murder.

Children, women and the elderly were mostly affected, he said.

Dlamini said 638 people were also arrested in November for assault, 347 for assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, 196 for malicious damage to property and 15 for murder.

Dlamini said all those arrested would be appearing in various magistrate’s courts soon.
