UPDATE: United action nabs ‘criminals’

Security companies, Wierdabrug police and residents followed the vehicle.

Centurion Concerned Citizens (CCC) have praised security guards and Wierdapark residents for their quick action during a shootout in Pretoria earlier on Tuesday.

According to CCC spokesperson, Hannes du Buisson, men in a white Audi with false registration plates attempted to break into a house in Montagu Street, Wierdapark X2.

“They were unsuccessful and retried their luck in Pongola Street where they held up residents at gunpoint,” du Buisson said.

“Unconfirmed reports suggest a child was among the people held up.”

But police spokesperson, Captain Ilze Jones said that was untrue.

According to Du Buisson, a vigilant resident reported the Audi chasing away from the scene.

Security companies, police and residents pursued the vehicle.

“Unconfirmed reports suggest that the Audi sped off in the direction of Mamelodi and the occupants fired at the pursuing security guards,” du Buisson said.

Hi-Risk Unit security spokesperson Arthur Crewe said the officers returned fire as they chased the three culprits from Centurion until they caught up with them on the N1.

“The men were driving at over 200km/h on the highway.”

The driver of the Audi lost control of the vehicle in Cussonia Avenue and crashed into the palisade.

One of the robbers was shot dead on the scene, another was in critical in the hospital and the third was arrested.

“Taking hands [with each other] is the only way to fight crime successfully. Three less criminals on the street tonight,” du Buisson said.
