What to do when being held hostage

Get some tips on what to do in a hostage situation.

Four people were killed, including the captor, in a hostage situation in the east of Pretoria yesterday.

In the event of a hostage situation, victims are urged to humanise themselves to their captor.

This advice comes from Professor Jaco Barkhuizen in the department of criminology at the University of Limpopo. Barkhuizen was speaking to 702‘s John Robbie this morning following the hostage situation in the east of Pretoria yesterday, which saw four people killed, including the captor.

Barkhuizen told Robbie there were nine different types of hostage situations but said it was too early to judge which type yesterday’s incident could be classified as.

He emphasised the importance of humanising victims to the captor but at the same time, making the captor feel as though he/she is in control.

Barkhuizen said the police’s role in hostage situations was to minimise damage and that if it looked as though the captor was going to cause damage to others and to themselves, the police would swoop in.

Barkhuizen also provided the following tips for victims of a hostage situation:

  • Take cover and try to hide
  • Try to build raport with the captor
  • Don’t speak unless you are spoken to
  • Escape if you can
  • Believe that you are going to survive the hostage situation
  • Listen to the captor and to police
  • Watch out for warning signs and react to them.
