DA councillor arrested in the name of charity

“I’m doing it with love. It is all for a worthy cause.”

DA councillor Elma Nel was arrested on Friday on charges of being too friendly and smiling too much.

Nel spent the entire day locked up in a cell at Hercules police station wearing second-hand prison overalls and waiting for her bail of R250 to be posted.

But Nel was on her worst behaviour and every time her bail was paid, she smiled and was arrested all over again.

Luckily her arrest, and money paid towards her bail, were all for a good cause. It was in aid of Disability Month, Sport Against Crime.

Hercules police station raised the money in the form of Nel’s bail for the Phyllis Robertson Home for the disabled.

“I’m doing it with love. It is all for a worthy cause,” Nel told Rekord on Wednesday.

“If we don’t reach our target of R25 000 by Friday, I am willing to stay there all weekend.”

By the time of publishing Elma was still in jail. The total amount of money raised had not been available yet.
