Students surprise cancer kids

"We were able to collect more than 200 food items and toiletries within a short space of 5 days."

Children battling cancer were surprised with a donation from Boston Media House Arcadia students on Wednesday.

Public relations (PR) students rallied their peers and collected the non-perishable food and toiletries donated to Childhood Cancer Foundation (Choc).

Third year student Leago Monareng said the aim of the donation was to change students’ perceptions of cancer.

“We [students] chose to support Choc as we realised there was a certain stigma associated with cancer… that it was a death sentence.”

Monareng said Boston Arcadia chose the theme “have a heart for children with cancer” as a way of creating awareness and educating students on the disease.

“Choc does not receive any funding from the government and relies heavily on donations.”

Monareng said it was important for students to realise they had an important role to play in supporting organisations such as Choc.

Yolanda Khan, another third year student, said the support they received from other students was overwhelming.

“We were able to to collect more than 200 food items and toiletries within a short space of five days”.

Regional manager at Choc Ian Schomper said she was grateful to the students for the donation.

“Their donation is a kind gesture of support and is highly valued.”
