Residents challenged to donate blood

It is important to donate blood, especially in winter when there is a high demand.

A blood drive will be held at Netcare Unitas Hospital in Centurion on Wednesday, 15 June.

The drive will be hosted by the SA National Blood Service (SANBS).

Emer-G-Med spokesperson Braam Kruger said organisers were well-prepared for the drive, which will take place from 10:00 to 15:00.

“There was such a massive turnout at the previous drive, we have now doubled the staff and the setup for tomorrow.”

Kruger said the aim was to get 1 000 people to donate blood.

“We are challenging Centurion again to meet the target.”

Kruger said he was really impressed with the huge turnout at last year’s drive, but was saddened by the number of people who could not donate blood because of the time limit to donate blood.

According to the SANBS, there had been a decrease in blood donations in recent years.

SANBS head of inventory Clive Mkhwanazi told Rekord fewer people donated blood during winter.

He said this was probably due to the cold weather and a lot of people falling ill during this time.

“A lot of people get sick in winter and it was hard for them to get to the donation stations,” said Mkhwanazi.

He said it was important that people donated blood in winter because the demand was high.
