Elardus Park residents demand answers to a state houses condition.

The condition of a state-owned house east of Pretoria has many residents furious and they demand answers to a problem they believe continues to grow unattended.

Elardus Park residents claim a house on Traka Street may become a harbour for criminals due to overgrown shrubs and tall grass surrounding the premises. Residents in agreement, state the ownership of the house remains a mystery they demand to be solved.

Resident and community representative, Peter Minny said the house remained a problem. Residents agreed it needed immediate attention.

He said the house was confirmed state-owned property which was contracted to the South African Police Service.

Minny said there was a man living in the deteriorated house who was an officer.

He said he did not understand the officer’s role at a house that remained a health hazard for many residents.

“Residents are concerned as the house is in a derelict state which needs immediate attention. The property is not only regarded as unsightly and in a bad state, but poses a health problem due to the fact that pests like rats are breeding there,” Minny said.

Rekord found the officer living on the run-down premises.

The officer, who asked not to be named, confirmed he was a member of the South African Police Service.

He said there were issues pending between him and the police service.

The man who seemed to be living inside the shabby house said he was waiting for the police force to provide maintenance to the neglected house he lived in.

“They said they would provide maintenance but they have yet to come,” he said.

Confirming that the premises was owned by SAPS, he said he understood very well how his neighbours felt about the state the house is in, but mentioned he was waiting to be relieved from standing guard at the house.

Minny said communication between police and himself had gone on for over a year with nothing coming from it.

Lyttelton police were still to confirm the matter at time of publishing.
