Tombstone for ANC fighter unveiled

Family, comrades and friends gathered to celebrate the unveiling of one of the founder of the ANC Women’s League.

The community of Eersterust celebrated the unveiling of a tombstone for ANC women’s veteran Maria Kelly on Saturday.

The event was held at her house in Titus Avenue, Eersterust were family and friends gathered.

ANC dignitaries were also there in their numbers, from members of the women’s league to the mayor of Tshwane, Kgosientso Ramokgopa.

Gogo Kelly, as many called her, died 15 October 2014 at the age of 89 after a short illness. She was one of the woman that marched to the Union Buildings against the pass laws. She was a member of the ANC Women’s League in ward 43.

Gogo Kelly’s granddaughter in law Agatha C.Kelly said Gogo was a real fighter.

“She took part in the historic march to Union Building in 1956. She was also put under house arrest for 15 years for trying to fight the apartheid government.”

Gogo Kelly had two daughters, eight grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild, Kelly said.

The Kelly family have expressed their sincere graduated to all parties involved in making the day a success.
