Classic cars on show for charity

Some of the classic cars on show had come from far afield as Johannesburg and Durban.

Hundreds of vintage and classic cars were on show to raise money for charity at the Pretoria Old Motor Club House on Sunday.

Club spokesperson Frik Kraamwinkel said all proceeds from the gate takings would go to the Sonitus School for the hearing impaired in East Lynne.

Kraamwinkel said the event coincided with the 50th anniversary of the club that would be officially commemorated in April.

“Today the focus is on American classic cars although there are non-American vehicles. Some of the cars come from as far afield as Johannesburg and Durban,” he said.

The club started with fewer than 10 people and has about 150 members today.

He said the POMC prided itself in the fact that it was the host of the biggest classic car show in South Africa.

“The annual show called Cars in the Park, is held every year at the Zwartkops Race Track in August,” said Kraamwinkel.

Kerneels Potgieter, caretaker of the Kobus Mastert Collection, said it boasted  35 classic cars.

“Most of them are American models and we have a museum on Zambezi Drive.”

Mastert said one could not put a price tag on any of the cars in his collection.

“The cost of any classic car is dependent on its condition and rarity. For instance how would you sell a car in pristine condition that was one of seven ever built and one of the two right hand drives of their kind in the world?”

Mastert said his passion for collectible cars dated back from the 1970s.

“My driving lessons were in a classic car. It was love at first drive and I have never looked back ever since”.

Another enthusiast, John Jacobs, said his 1951 Cadillac was going to be a family heirloom.

“It is a privilege to own such a beautiful and rare set of wheels. I won’t sell it and I don’t want to sell it. A plus about this type of car is that it is not high maintenance like the high-tech cars of today.”
