Love Walk raises money for animals

A fundraising Love Walk was held for the Wollies Animal Shelter on Saturday.

People turned out in their numbers with their “canine children” on Saturday to celebrate Valentine’s Day and raise money for the Wollies Animal Project in Pretoria.

The Wollies Animal Project Love Walk was meant to spoil “our animal kids on a special day”, said organisers Linda Ludek and Valerie Breytenbach. The event was held every year.

“It is quite costly to keep the project running because the veterinary and food costs are high. The shelter has 160 cats and 450 dogs which are all up for adoption,” said Ludek.

On any given day, the dogs consumed 200kg of dog food while the cats ate between 10kg-15kg of cat litter per day.

“Some of the animals here are lost while others were left behind when their owners moved. We try our best to find good homes for them,” said Breytenbach.

It cost R300 to adopt a cat and between R400 and R550 for a dog, depending on its size.

Ludik said animals brought to the shelter underwent a thorough medical examination and would not be up for adoption for at least two weeks.

“Once we are satisfied about the animal’s health and there is an interested person, we conduct a home visit to ensure that the animal is going to a good home. These are lovable animals who are just looking for a good home filled with love. I would urge people to adopt them.”

There were dogs of all sizes and ages.

People searching for missing animals could visit the shelter or the Wollies Animal Project’s Facebook page.

Breytenbach said: “The turnout from the community today has been amazing. It shows that people love and care for their animals, but we can all do more for the ones we have here.”
