Clarity about markings on street light poles in Herculus

Markings on streetlight poles are apparently for different political parties.

Following an article about markings on street light poles in the Hercules area, a resident has come forward with an explanation.

The resident who cannot be named claimed the markings were to indicate where political parties could attach promotional posters, leading up to the local government elections.

Maroon, yellow, black and blue dots had been spotted on poles in Claremont, Pretoria Tuine, Mountain View, Suiderberg, Daspoort, Hermanstad and Booysens.

The markings had been worrying residents because they did not know what it symbolised. Stories were doing the rounds that the dots were markings made by criminals.

Resident Daleen Coetzee said the pole in front of her house was marked with a blue dot. She said residents were worried and wanted to know if they were at risk and who had marked the poles.

Some residents raised questions on social media.

Rumours were that the marks were the work of criminals, intending some criminal activity. Another story was that the different colours symbolised murder, rape or another type of crime intended by criminals.

A resident posted on the community Facebook page that Tshwane metro’s electricity department had told her their department was responsible for the markings.

Residents said they were worried for the safety of their families and neighbours.

The Independent Electoral Committee (IEC) had been contacted to enquire whether they knew anything about the markings but they did not.

Despite several attempts to get comment from Tshwane metro, nothing has been received yet.
