Markings on poles worry residents

Residents want the mystery of dots spray painted on streetlight poles in front of their houses solved.

Markings on streetlight poles has residents of Hercules and surrounding areas worried. The residents say they noticed that dots had been the spray painted on the poles a while ago.

The maroon, yellow, black and blue dots have also been spotted on poles in Claremont, Pretoria Tuine, Mountain View, Suiderberg, Daspoort, Hermanstad and Booysens.

Resident Daleen Coetzee said the pole in front of her house was marked with a blue dot.

“I have also seen different colour dots on poles in other areas,” she said.

She said residents were worried and wanted to know if they were at risk and who had marked the poles.

Some residents raised this questions on social media.

Rumours were that the marks were left by criminals who were coming back to rob. Another story was that the different colours symbolised murder, rape or another type of crime the criminals intended to commit.

Apparently the police were aware of the matter and were investigating, but could not be reached for comment.

A resident posted on the community Facebook page that the Tshwane Electricity department had told her it was responsible for the markings.

Residents said they were worried for their safety, families and neighbours.

Tshwane metro had yet to comment.
