Centurioners help their furry friends

Volunteers turn out in droves to help the Centurion SPCA.

Centurioners from all walks of life have faced the challenge of the current heatwave and risen to help those who need it most, the dogs and cats at the SPCA.

For the past two days, volunteers have taken time out to provide the loving animals at the Centurion SPCA with whatever they could to help them cool down.

“The outpour of support we have received over the past few days has been utterly incredible,” said Tshwane SPCA, Centurion branch manager Christina Masemola.

“The work we do here is very difficult and often thankless. To see people come together like this and help these animals is incredible. It gives us new strength to continue our work,” she said.

Most of the volunteers had responded to a Facebook post calling on people to help out at the SPCA during the heatwave.

Almost all brought packets of ice along, and spent time walking the dogs before cooling them down in cold baths.

“We are so thankful for the wonderful work all the volunteers did, but a special thank you has to go to volunteers Chris Badenhorst from Lawn Liquid, Andy from Pezulu Outdoor, Renine Philpott and Claudia Brasler,” said Masemola.

Badenhorst donated and installed mist sprayers in all of the dog kennels, which can be switched on ay any time to help the dogs cool down.

Brasler and other members of her family, Dylan and Chelsea Hayes and Devon Taylor, all installed shade netting on the dog kennels and cattery, a donation from Centurion Chamberlains.

Pezulu Outdoor also donated a large banner that will be used as shaded netting for the dog kennels.

Brasler also spoke highly of the Centurion SPCA and staff.

“The work the Centurion SPCA staff and especially the inspectors do is wonderful. They see a lot of cruel things, but still continue helping these poor animals,” she said.

“I really hope that this will inspire more people to support the SPCA, especially in their future projects.”

Masemola also called on more volunteers to join the SPCA and help improve the lives of the animals they help.

“There is always something to do here. Anybody can come and help out. We are also planning on clearing the overgrown exercise area at the back of the kennels and making in fun and beautiful for the dogs and will definitely need some manpower.”
