Little Red Riding Hood with a twist

Aspiring young actors delivered a splendid performance at the Gem Village Hall.

The story of Little Red Riding Hood with twists and turns was played out by aspiring young actors at the Gem Village Hall in Irene on Friday evening.

Mother and daughter Cheryl and Ashleigh Pritchard who started their own production company called Wing It Stage Productions are the brains behind the stage and had worked hard together with their crew to keep the audience entertained.

“The idea was to start our own company which would help young actors who are talented but have not yet been employed,” Cheryl said.

Ashleigh who is currently doing her third year in drama at the University of Witwatersrand finds the time to study and coach young actors and actresses from grade 4 onwards.

“We hope to get our own musical theatre and to provide work for actors who are not getting paid so they can get to teach the younger children,” Ashleigh explained.

The story of little red riding hood ended with a message of good values, which entertained both the young and old.

Mother and daughter get to mix the old with the new, as Cheryl writes the scripts while adding slight changes, Ashleigh keeps it hip and fun for the much younger audience.

Both rely on the money they receive from the acting coaching classes to pay for the stage productions and other logistics.

“We want to own a green theatre so that everything can run on solar. This show has already cost us R20 000 and everything comes from our own pocket. We do not get any money and hope we could get more so we could achieve more in our cause,” Cheryl explained.

The duo also produce a series of plays and give children from underprivileged families a chance to enjoy arts on stage.

“We need more people to see our show so they can know about us and what we do,” Ashleigh said.
