Not just a pretty face

Young Danville girl uses her win as Miss Teen SA to help the less fortunate.

Teenage beauty Veruska Uys from Danville is not just a pretty face.

She has for the past years been using her talent to help the less fortunate.

Uys (14), a grade 8 pupil at Centurion High school, has taken part in numerous pageants and has won several of them.

“Since the age of 10 months she has been taking part in pageants until now,” Uys’ mother, Gloria Uys said.

Uys holds the following titles amongst others, Miss Cansa 2014, Miss Northern Gauteng 2014, Miss jacaranda City 2014 and Miss Royal Beauty 2015, Miss Out of Africa 2015 and Miss Teen RSA 2015.

Gloria said whenever her daughter won a pageant she used her title to help people.

“Veruska has done so much for people. She has collected money for to littl girls with a rare muscle cancer, Gemma and Nelmarie. She also collects food for the less fortunate in Daspoort at a place called Growing Wise Homeless Centre,” the proud mother said.

Uys is also an animal lover and is busy collecting money for Carol Booth, Monkey Helpline who needed to open a rehab centre for monkeys.

Uys has her own Facebook page that she started for her winter feet project.

She has since been able to give about 30 children school shoes, socks, beanies, hand cloves and scarves and is working towards helping a 100 and more children next year.

The young lady said she loved doing this.

“It’s not about wearing the crown on your head, but in your heart.”

Uys was not sure yet what she wanted to be one day, saying for now she just wanted to be a happy teenager who enjoyed life and helped those in need.

“Pageantry is a doorway for those who want to be on stage and learn more about themselves,” said Gloria.

“There are so many things you learn not only about yourself, but also about communication skills, leadership, interviews, and poise.”
