Top honours for local entrepreneur

Centurion businessman Alastair Laing has scooped two awards for his ability as a chief executive officer.

A Centurion entrepreneur has made the city proud by scooping two sought-after awards for leadership.

Alastair Laing was named the South African CEO of the Year and received an award as one of the top three CEOs in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

At the helm of Unlimited Events Group, Laing was honoured at the South African business Excellence awards function and the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) business excellence awards.

From humble beginnings – running the company with his sister Rosemary Foord (corr) out of a container with décor stock in 1998 – the Unlimited Event Group was currently the preferred event solution supplier to many blue chip venues across the country.

“In these economic conditions it is vital to innovate and adapt your business to weather the storm. By being nominated once again for CEO of the year I feel we as a company have made South Africa proud,” he said this week.

“I salute the entire Unlimited Events Group team for their continued commitment and dedication to delivering outstanding service and creativity.”

Unlimited Events Group is a leading supplier to the South African event industry, theming thousands of private and corporate events, product launches, weddings, year-end functions and conferences.

It employs 120 staff in Centurion.

In 2008, Laing’s dynamic décor and entertainment company had burgeoned to more than 100 employees.

In 2013 Laing cemented his vision for growth and formed Unlimited Events Group to house the various event supply divisions including Unlimited Events Décor, Unlimited Events Entertainment, Unlimited Kids Parties, Unlimited Balloons, and most recent acquisitions Unlimited Hire and Unlimited Photos.

Today Unlimited Events Group was the preferred supplier to venues across the country, including Gallagher Convention Centre, Emperor’s Palace, Three Oaks and Royal Elephant.

The company was rated by SEESA as a level 3 BEE and Unlimited Events Group continually complied with government regulation in terms of the previously disadvantaged, internal training and was an upstanding Centurion corporate citizen that gave freely of its time to uplift surrounding communities in need.

Despite the economic downturn, under Laing’s watch, Unlimited Events Group had experienced phenomenal growth in the last 18 months.

His company recently invested in leading furniture hire business Inspire Furniture, he formalised a merger with high end audio visual conferencing business to form Unlimited Production and in 2016 he planned to launch a stretch tent business and a new Unlimited Events showroom.

According to his staff, Laing’s nomination for CEO of the Year stemmed from his continued energy and dynamism combined with a resolute belief that a corporate legacy spanned beyond company structure, events booked, products, sales and growth.

His belief in making a positive change within the people he connected and engaged with was what made him the respected leader he was today.
