Daspoort tunnel made safe

The Daspoort tunnel is finally clean and lit after the repair work was done on Sunday.

Residents who have been attacked inside the Daspoort tunnel can now breathe a sigh of relieve after maintenance to improve its security was done on Sunday.

The tunnel was closed from 07:00 until 16:00 for maintenance work.

Ward 55 councillor Frik van Wyk said he had to do something and the tunnel was a priority to him.

“For months pedestrians felt unsafe in the tunnel. Many calls from residents day after day could not be ignored. The tunnel was my first priority after I was elected two months ago. People were attacked in the tunnel and being robbed,” he said.

Van Wyk said he was relieved the lights in the tunnel were all working again after they were replaced with new technology globes.

“We thank Superintendent Budgie Mare of the metro police and Hein Sanders from the electricity department,” he said.

Tshwane metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo said the metro repaired cables and lights that were out of order.

“The temporary closure of the tunnel in Pretoria West was due to repairs to cables and lights that were ravaged by a truck passing through the tunnel,” he said.

For months residents and motorists had been complaining about dirt and the darkness inside the tunnel.
