Vehicle explodes on the Mabopane Highway

Vehicle caught fire on the Mabopane Highway after the petrol tank exploded.

A loud bang that sounded like shots on the Mabopane Highway on Thursday evening left residents in the area worried.

While residents thought it was gunshots they heard, it was actually a vehicle that exploded highway.

According to André Kruger, the acting chairperson of the Hercules CPF, the petrol tank of the vehicle exploded.

“The vehicle caught fire and then exploded. The sound was hectic and even residents as far as Pretoria Gardens heard the bang,” he said.

Kruger said the vehicle was a VW Amarok and the incident happened at about 22:50.

“People on the scene tried to distinguish the fire. The Tshwane fire brigade also assisted at the scene,” said Kruger.

The driver of the vehicle was luckily not harmed.
