Councillor quits ‘racist’ DA for ANC

Former DA councillor Winston Campbell quit the party and crossed the floor to the ruling ANC.

The DA councillor “facing disciplinary charges for being AWOL from caucus meetings” has joined the ruling ANC.

Winston Campbell rejoined the ruling party last week.

Councillor Marietta Aucamp, DA chief whip in the Tshwane metro said Campbell faced disciplinary charges for failing to appear before a mandatory performance assessment panel and for consistently missing meetings without a valid apology.

“We wish both Campbell and the ANC good luck with their new found partnership,” she said.

But Campbell blamed racism and unfair treatment by the DA for his decision.

“I am concerned for the many people I convinced to join and/or support the DA… I apologise to them,” he said.

“I am also fed-up with the youthism and youngsterist preference given to girl children and boy children who clearly do not yet possess the necessary experience.”

Campbell said he was summoned to a disciplinary hearing because he told the owner of the Eersterust Pick n Pay, Manny Gomes, to give local residents a BBBEE stake in the shop.

“Gomes then complained to Fred Nel, former leader of the DA Tshwane caucus. Gomes is still the only shareholder at the Pick n Pay Eersterust, a transgression of the BBBEE Act,” he said.

Gomes rubbished Campbell’s claim.

“I have been a Pick n Pay franchisee for seven years. We do not run a spaza shop and Pick n Pay will sue if he continues with these allegations,” said Gomes.

Nel could not be reached as his phone rang unanswered.

Campbell said he was called a “Bruin man” and a “Hotnot” at a DA meeting chaired by Solly Msimanga

“Nobody had the guts to defend me or condemn these wanton, racist attacks.

The chair is now the DA’s Tshwane mayoral candidate,” said Campbell.

Campbell claimed that when he asked Msimanga why he had not protected him from the abuse, Msimanga had laughed.

Msimanga told Rekord he had no appetite for petty squabbles with a bitter individual.

“I would never laugh at any racial slurs. He is a bitter person who will do anything to discredit me now that he is with the ANC. I have better things to focus my energies on and that is to win the elections next year. He needs to tell the truth that he is disgruntled because he could not make it to parliament as younger and more committed people were chosen in his place,” he said.

Mayoral spokesperson Blessing Manale said Ramokgopa had welcomed Campbell to the fold of the ANC and it was an indication more people across the colour and class divides were realising the ANC was committed to transformation.

“We believe councillor Campbell will contribute immensely to the development programme of our city, and to building a South Africa which belongs to all who live in it,” said Manale.
