Sewage leak a health hazard for customers

Petrol station customers complain about sewage water running down the street that poses a health risk to them.

A sewerage leak near the EPG garage in E’skia Mphahlele Drive has become a health hazard.

In the beginning of August the leak was reported to the Tshwane metro but nothing was done about it.

“I have reported the matter to the metro almost every day since the sewerage started leaking and I have six different reference numbers,” Antoinette van Zyl from the garage said.

She said every time she phoned the metro to follow up with the reference numbers she gets told the job cards have been closed.

“After I struggled for three weeks, only then did the foreman contact me when I complained to the call centre about how job cards can be closed if the problem is still there. He gave me the head of the department of water and sanitation’s contact number,” Van Zyl said.

She said when she called she was told the problem is not the department’s and they cannot repair the sewerage leak, she should call the department of housing.

The sewerage leak is at a shelter near their garage.

“I spoke to the man from housing and he said to me I have to remember no one is working for free. The manager of the shelter should report this, so a job card can be opened before they can repair the leak,” she said.

Van Zyl was told the problem is from inside and not only outside the shelter. She said the man she spoke to said he will follow up who the person in charge of the shelter is and come back to her.

“This is 11 days ago and there is still no answer from him. I took it further and contacted the DA council member. They are still busy to establish who is in charge and who has to take responsibility to repair the leak,” she said.

She said the situation have their customers complaining because the water runs down the street, smells bad and poses a health risk.

An enquiry has been sent to the metro about the matter.
