Mandela day for dogs

Dog lovers spend Mandela Day at Jan Smuts House in Irene.

The SPCA held an event on Mandela Day known as the WAG – A – WALK at the Jan Smuts Museum Irene, in Centurion.  This event was to help raise funds for the SPCA but also to provide a platform for all dogs to be out and about while receiving better health care information.

The event began on Saturday morning 07:30 with patrons registering for the 4km walk with their dogs.   A registration fee of R 20.00 per person, and R 10.00 per dog ensured the dogs were entered into a lucky draw later on in the day.

The aim of the event was to teach people about better pet care, but also to help raise resources for the SPCA to provide a better service for dogs as they are not funded by government but rely solely on sponsorships, donations and assistance from the public.

On a cold Saturday morning, families brought man’s best friend to on outdoor hiking experience.

Korky Levanon, spokesperson for the Tshwane SPCA expressed what an exciting experience this initiative always is, as it was not the first. She also asked that the public lend a hand when they can as they were not funded by government, but had to raise resources all on their own.

Nelson Mandela believed in compassion, and this Mandela day, the SPCA showed just that, but this time to someone we sometimes forget to acknowledge.
