Hundreds flock to Marikana The Musical

Marikana The Musical is a smash hit.

The State Theatre was abuzz on Friday evening as hundreds of people gathered together for the opening of Marikana – The Musical.

The six-time Naledi Award winning production, directed by Aubrey Sekhabi, featured 30 cast members who gave faces and names to the people who died during a strike in Marikana in 2012.

Thanking the crowd after the show, Sekhabi said it had been an absolute pleasure working on the production of Marikana and said they should continue supporting local productions.

“Let it not just be Marikana, continue watching local talent,” he said.

Renowned actor Meshack Mavuso, who played the role of Mr Green, said it was important that South Africans tell their own stories.

“Nobody can tell them better than we do. Let us not wait for an American to come and tell our stories,” Mavuso said.

The production used new compositions by Mpho Mckenzi Matome and Zakhele Mabena, the traditional songs that were sung in unison and beautiful harmonies as the miners expressed their emotions, frustrations and poverty.

After a successful run of the show last year, the public had demanded that the show be brought back one last time.

Marikana – The Musical will run at the State Theatre until 16 August.
