The dance group Beat Boppers keeps Mamelodi kids off the street

Centurion-based dance group, Beat Boppers visited Mamelodi on Saturday to educate kids about dancing.

Centurion-based dance group Beat Boppers visited Mamelodi on Saturday to educate kids about dancing.

Group founder and singer Rea Le Roux said the visit to Mamelodi’s Beer Hall was part of the group’s involvement in raising drug awareness with the theme “hip hop against drugs”.

“One of my vocal students from Mamelodi, Gift Mashabane, briefed us about the situation in Mamelodi and about the effect of drugs on young people. We thought that we had to do something,” Rea said.

Beat Boppers brought a number of dancers to teach the kids some steps.

“It’s all about keeping the kids off the street and giving them something to keep them busy, especially during the holidays,” she said.

Dance coach Gert Jansen van Vuuren said he was impressed with the understanding and enthusiasm shown by the kids.

Mashabane said he had learnt a lot from Rea and was hoping to transfer knowledge and skills to the kids.

“Drug abuse is a serious problem that affects all of us. It is important that we teach the kids the difference between wrong and right at an early age,” he said.

Rea le Roux is a household name from the massive hits she achieved with her Wrecking Ball Parody, “ek’s gatvol vir huisskoonmaak” that went viral.

The spoof drew more than 42 000 listens on the Jacaranda fm website in 2 weeks, over 162 000 hits on you tube to date and was played on the Martin Bester Drive, Jacaranda fm, 5 fm and many more SA radio stations.

Her parody song also reached Huisgenoot.com, Huisgenoot Magazine, Front Page of Yahoo SA and Rapport! The video went viral on people’s cellphones via Whatsapp worldwide under Afrikaans speaking ladies.
