Metro declares war on drugs in the city

Tshwane metro urged everyone who loves the country to join the fight against drugs and substance abuse in Pretoria.

Acting Tshwane metro mayor Eulanda Mabusela declared war on drugs and substance abuse in Pretoria.

“The war against drugs and substance abuse must be fought by anybody who loves the country and believes that South Africa is a good country to live in,” Mabusela said, addressing more than 40 local young stars who attended the Tshwane Youth Empowerment event at the South African State Theatre on Saturday.

Mabusela urged Pretoria residents not to sit and watch while the future of children on the streets is being destroyed by drug lords.

“Let’s join hands and fight against the scourge of drugs and substance abuse.”

Mabusela said the fight against drugs and substance abuse was a revolution that must be attained. She urged youth in the arts fraternity to send messages through arts that would encouraged the youth living on the streets to refrain from taking drugs and build a bright future for themselves.

Residents should, among others, join the fight through reporting suspected drug dealers to the police.

Mabusela made the call to fight against drugs while thousands of youth, who are part of 60% of Pretoria’s youth population, live on the streets of Pretoria.

Recently, Rekord reported on theft out of motor vehicles in Robert Sobukwe Street, formally Esselen Street, in Sunnyside. Several parts of the city such as the notorious Brown Street are drug havens and crime destinations.

Rekord found that several youth living on the streets commit crimes such as theft and robberies. They do these crimes to obtain money for their next fix.

The city centre and surroundings have a problem with smash-and-grabs and other forms of theft from motor vehicles such as thieves making use of car remote jamming devices.

The police together with the Sunnyside City Improvement District security have recently warned residents about high incidences of theft along Robert Sobukwe Street, where valuables are stolen regularly.

The crime fighting agencies urged residents to double check by hand that all doors of their vehicles including the boot are locked properly before leaving them in parking bays.

Rekord also established that some youth living on the streets make money to buy drugs and sometimes food by washing windscreens on street corners.
