Cop killed in N3 shootout

An intense shootout between police and an unknown number of criminals left one killed police officer while two others are in a critical condition.

A police officer was killed on Sunday in a shoot-out between police and an unknown number of men on the N3 Johannesburg highway, Emer-G-Med ambulance services said.

More than 100 shots were fired on London Road when a white Toyota Atios was hijacked, the Glenvista community policing forum (CPF) said on social media.

Emer-G-Med spokesperson Danielle Dooley said the killed officer suffered a gunshot wound to the head.

According to reports, two other police officers were airlifted to hospital after they were wounded in the crossfire.

Dooley said one criminal was shot in the head and is in a critical condition under police guard.

According to the Glenvista CPF the hijacked Atios was recovered close to Orpin Road.

Police could not be reached for comment as they were still investigating at the scene.
