Commuters have their say on termination of bus services

Commuters have their say on Putco terminating their services.

Since Putco announced they would be discontinuing their services from 1 April, commuters have been considering convenient alternatives.

Putco handed out a notice to commuters last month, explaining the bus contract was operating at a financial loss and the company could not afford to carry those losses any longer.

“Regrettably, Putco has now reached a point where is it unable to continue servicing this loss-making contract,” the notice said.

A Putco bus driver told Rekord on condition of anonymity that the bus drivers did not know what will happen on 1 April.

“From what we heard, the transport department is at fault. They do not want to increase the bus subsidy,” he said.

The driver also did not know which bus service would take over from Putco. “I do not think there is a bus service that is suitable for Mamelodi, it is too big. They would not cope, only Putco is suitable to operate in Mamelodi.”

Rekord asked a number of commuters how they felt about Putco terminating its Mamelodi service on 1 April.

Commuter Thandiwe Seabela was sad when she learned of the news that Putco would be discontinuing their services. “We have all become a family and building new relationships is very hard. We have good relationships with drivers,” she said.
