Monster race attracts more athletes
Citizens of all ages flocked to the Harlequins sport grounds to participate.
This year’s 38th annual Medihelp Sunrise Monster broke the record of being the best contested race compared to the previous events.
Thousands of athletes took part in the event held at Harlequins club complex in Groenkloof, Pretoria, on Saturday.
Rian Grobler, one of the organisers, said more than 7 500 athletes took part in this year’s event, which was more than the almost 7 200 recorded last year.
The increasing number of athletes who took part means they love living a healthy lifestyle, Grobler said.
“We are excited about the turnout. This is the biggest race we have ever had,” Grobler said.
He believes the event addresses what is important to the people, which is keeping healthy.
The event consisted of 32km, 10km and 5km races.
Athletes who participated in the event were children, adults and senior citizens.
An 80-year-old senior citizen, Ken Nurden, said the 10km race was tough and he made a joke that he thought of offering his services to be a marshal next year, but realised after reaching the finish line it is not the best option to quit.
“Why did they call it mini-monster? I can promise you there was nothing mini about this monster,” said Nurden.
He, however, said he was happy to take part and was looking forward to participate in more to come.
