Doing it for the dogs

Santa Paws and Border Collie Rescue teamed up with La Brie Cattery and Kennels for a fundraiser.

Santa Paws non profit organisation and Border Collie Rescue teamed up for a charity dog wash day at La Brie cattery and kennels on Saturday morning.

Animal lovers from across Pretoria joined in the fun, treating Border Collie Rescue and La Brie’s dogs to a good bath and grooming.

The event was such a hit, that by 10:30 in the morning, three of the charismatic collies had been adopted by animal lovers.

“We are so surprised by the large turnout today. Everyone enjoyed it so much, and we are glad some of the dogs were adopted,” said Yolande Gerber of Santa Paws.

The day was not only about spending time with the dogs, but also an important fundraiser. Border Collie Rescue provides sanctuary to many dogs, including Tricia, a former sheep-herding dog, who had been abandoned by her owner when she was too old to work.

Bear, an eight-month-old border collie cross, owned by Lindy Coetzee, owner of La Brie was dropped off at Border Collie Rescue as a mere four-week-old pup, after he had been found roaming the streets. Nobody adopted him, so he stayed with Coetzee.

As he was growing up, Bear started limping and Coetzee had him tested. Results showed his body could not keep up with his growth, and as a result, he had developed severe hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia with signs of calcification. The radius in both front legs had also fused too soon, and his ulna continued to grow. All of this impacted severely on his shoulders.

Bear now requires multiple surgeries, but because these procedures are extremely expensive, Coetzee needs help. Santa Paws sold various items on Saturday in aid of Bear. However, this is not enough.

Santa Paws and Border Collie Rescue are calling on animal lovers for support. Anyone who can help, or wants to adopt a dog can phone Dina-Vera Schmittknecht on 082-772-8525. People who want to get involved with Santa Paws can phone Yolande on 083-777-7498.
