Circuit racing championship on track

SA circuit racing championship series kicked off at the Zwartkops circuit in Centurion on Saturday.

The 2015 SA circuit racing championship series was off to a good start on Saturday as hundreds of motor sport fans gathered at the Zwartkops racing track in Centurion for the event.

A variety of national and club participants took to the tarmac under the Extreme Festival umbrella.

The series this year will see all the SA title events coinciding with club racing, giving spectators a mixed bag of entertainment.

The national part of Saturday’s event saw the opening rounds of the 2015 SA production car championship.

The entry list was topped by the Engen Xtreme Audi A4 of Michael Stephen.

The multiple former champion was supported by the identical car of fellow-driver Simon Moss.

Taking them on at the front end of the field was the Sasol Audi A4 entries of Hennie Groenewald and Gennaro Bonafede.

Formerly known as Class T, the two-litre turbo category has no limitations this year with regard to turbo boosting and suspension.

Topping the class was the SMD Racing Ford Focus ST entries of Gary Formato and Shaun Duminy, strongly challenged by the VW Golf GTI entries of Graeme Nathan and Charl Smalberger.

Also competing was the Williams Hunt Chevrolet Cruze of Michael van Rooyen.

The privateer category for post-2004 production cars saw Mark du Toit (Audi A4) and Jordan Sherratt (Mini Cooper S) joining the fray at Zwartkops.
