The main beneficiary of the Bestmed Tuks race is the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA), and in order to emphasise this, Dries la Grange, CEO of Bestmed, and the Vice Chancellor of the University of Pretoria, Professor Cheryl De La Rey, competed with each other in a newly introduced 1km race dedicated to cancer. To ensure that Professor De La Rey, an experienced road runner, did not win by too great a distance, the two of them were chained together.
With its focus on community and family participation, the Bestmed Tuks race this year included a new 1km race dedicated to raising awareness and funds for cancer, as well as the usual 21.1 km, 10km and 5km races and the 10km wheelchair races.
More than 9 000 participants entered in one of the sections of this well-known race. Rekord was there to capture a share of the action in picture.

Rutendo Nyahora was the first woman home in the 10km race.

Olympic athlete, René Kalmer, won the womans section of the half marathon in the BestmedTuks race.
Cyclists of the new Bestmed club accompanied all the leaders in the different sections of the race.
Ken Nurden from the Agapé runners club was the oldest male competitor. Ken, who is running in the section for men over 80, is a road running legend in Pretoria.
Here is an example for all couch potatos. Derdre Larkin from Randburg Harriers is 83 years old and had completed the 10km race with ease.
Karla and Herman Hendriks of the Magnolia Club, tackled and completed the 10km race together.
Marco Pretorius from Centurion completed the 10km race while pushing his one-year old boy, Evan, in his pram.
