For the love of animals

Animal lovers enjoy Valentine’s Day with cats and dogs.

Wollies Animal Project in Hestea Park hosted a different sort of Valentine’s Day celebration on Saturday morning. One where the love for animals was shared, at the Wollies bi-monthly fun walk.

Animal lovers from across the city arrived in the early hours of Saturday morning to spend time with animals at the shelter. Participants were given the option of bringing their own dogs for a scenic 2.5km or 5km walk, or taking some of Wollies’ dogs for a walk. The entrance fee was R20 per dog and bringing along dog or cat food.

Participants walked around the Wollies facility, moving through various kennels, choosing a dog they wanted to spend time with. From Jack Rusells and Alsatians, to Chihuahuas and a mix-and-match of various cross breeds. All the dogs at Wollies just want one thing – love.

The Valentine’s Day walk was an opportunity for the dogs to enjoy a day out, and receive some love. Adorable goofs like Jack Russell Mr. Bean and mild mannered and loveable old ladies like cross-breed Bapsie all loved walking around, taking every opportunity to sniff their surroundings and enjoy the fresh air, running around in the open.

Animal lovers Willem and Driekie Viljoen brought along three unexpected guests, Larcy, Jessie and Oros – three Jack Russells that were once shelter dogs at Wollies. They joined in on the fun of the day, saying hello to old friends and enjoying a brisk walk on the Wollies grounds. Their gleaming coats were a testament of how well shelter dogs responded when adopted by loving families.

Visitors could also spend time in the cattery with Roger, Hanna and Prinses purring as they enjoyed a cuddle.

On the day, an anonymous organisation donated 150 blankets to Wollies, all to be used to brighten up and warm each dog’s kennel.

Isak and Elise Cloete, two primary school pupils decided that they wanted to help out as well and sold various home-made cookies, sweets and marmalades. All money was going to Wollies.

“We are so greatful to everyone who turned up and donated food and blankets today. Wollies needs all the help it can get, and this will really go a long way to helping all the animals here,” said Cilla Trexter of Wollies.

The next fun walk at Wollies will be on 25 April. For more information about the events, or people interested in adopting one of the animals at Wollies can phone Wayne on 061-191-5234.
