Great turnout for park clean-up

Residents stand together to make their park beautiful.

The clean-up of the Stymie Road bird sanctuary was a big success with residents from across Clubview turning out in large numbers to help rejuvenate the neglected park.

“This is incredible. So many people showed up to come and help,” said Celeste Sutherland, one of the organisers of the clean-up effort.

Residents of Stymie and the adjacent roads, and reaction officers from security companies ADT and Monitor Net all volunteered to help weed the park, remove invasive plants and cut down dead trees.

“For us it crucial to help build up communities from the inside and that is why we help out at events like this one,” said Maurice Malan, Community Development Manager at ADT.

Throughout the day, around 50 volunteers helped rejuvenate the ailing park. Coastal Hire sponsored bush whackers, chainsaws and tillers to help the volunteers effectively clean and clear the park.

“We are so thankful for everyone’s help with this. So many people and companies got involved and this would not have been possible without them,” said John Maclean, who, along with Sutherland organised the clean-up of the bird sanctuary.

Sutherland’s mother, the 92-year-old Jessie Weinrich, was ecstatic about the large turnout. Weinrich was the original inspiration and driving force behind getting the park clean.

DA Ward Councillor Ina Strijdom also attended the clean-up, sponsoring hot dogs, cold drinks and sweets for the hard-working volunteers, all of whom worked without any expectation of compensation. Just knowing they will soon have a beautiful new park was enough for them.

“Community projects like this are vital. These days people don’t know their neighbours, but when people come together like today, they learn who their neighbours are and are able to build a relationship of trust. It is vital for people to know their neighbours, especially in the fight against crime,” said Strijdom.
