Smiles all round at wag-a-walk

First SPCA wag-a-walk of the year was great fun for the entire family.

The Tshwane society for the prevention of cruelty to animals (SPCA) held its first wag-a-walk of the year on Saturday morning at Smuts House in Irene.

Hundreds of dog lovers and their furry, four-legged friends from across the province joined a walk- about in the lovely gardens of the Smuts House on a beautiful morning.

Schnauzers, Bulldogs, Boxers, Jack Russells and an assortment of different breeds and cross-breeds came together and enjoyed meeting new friends.

“The money we raise from this event goes directly to the inspectorate. Currently we have three inspectors who cover an area of almost 6 000 square kilometres, and together they respond to almost 15 cases a day. This money is desperately needed to ensure that the inspectors can respond to calls. Just yesterday (16 January) one of the inspectors responded to a cat that was stuck in razor wire. This money goes to help animals in situations like those,” said SPCA spokesperson Korky Levanon.

On the day, people could choose between longer or shorter walks across the historic grounds, depending on their own stamina and that of their dog. Sonja Mulder’s three-and-a-half month-old long hair Chihuahua Malia tired quickly on his tiny legs, so she had to carry him most of the time.

“This was the first time I’ve been here with my dog and we will definitely be back. We enjoyed it immensely,” said Anton de Witt, a dog lover who walked his Rottweiler, Waldo.

One of the dogs that caught everyone’s attention was Alistair White’s St. Bernard and Great Dane cross, Barney. This gentle giant weighs in at a staggering 80 kg and enjoyed posing for photos through the day, fully enjoying being the centre of attention.

The Wag Team also took part in the wag-a-walk. They groom previously abandoned dogs under the care of Ronnie Magic to become show dogs.

A lucky draw was held with prizes for pet accessory vouchers, massages, PicknPay shopping sprees and photo shoots with their pets.

“A big thank you to everyone who participated today. It was a big success, and we all enjoyed it. Our next wag-a-walk at Smuts House will be on 18 April, and everyone is welcome to join,” said Levanon.
