Cangro winners announced

The annual Cangro competition has drawn to an end, and the winners have been chosen.

An initiative encouraging children to grow food in cans has seen Laerskool Doringkloof walking away with a cheque for R5 000.

The Cangro Project announced its winners for 2014 at the Carols and Stars event at Centurion Mall.

The project aims to teach school children right across the country about the importance of green living, sustainability, growing their own food, and, most importantly, taking care of the environment.

The 2014 project has been running for four months, with children from schools right across Centurion taking part and growing their own plants upside down in the special Cangro cans.

The three schools in attendance on the finale night were Orefile Primary in Olievenhoutbosch, Laerskool Wierda Park and Laerskool Doringkloof, both from Centurion.

A pupil from each school was awarded as the overall winner from the individual’s school, based on the size and health of the plant. Hanro Bezuidenhout, Zinhle Mokwetle and Nikhira Piyariall were each chosen as their school’s winner, with Hanro being chosen as the Cangro Gardener of the Year.

The winning school, Laerskool Doringkloof, was awarded a cheque for R5 000 by Cangro and Centurion Mall.

“Our goal is to give every child in the country one of these cans,” said Diane Kramer, who founded Cangro with her brother Jody. “This project not only teaches kids about growing their own food, but teaches them responsibility as well.”

The Cangro project, now in its third year, is going from strength to strength and keeps growing each year, teaching kids to preserve the earth for future generations.
