Remembering Mandela

The South African government has called on citizens to remember former president Nelson Mandela on Friday.

Former president Nelson Mandela will be remembered on Friday, a year after he died on 5 December last year.

The government has set aside Friday 5 December to commemorate the icon and called on South Africans to remember their first president since the country became a real democracy.

Tshwane metro council said the commemoration sought to keep Mandela’s memory alive and ensure that the values he supported would continue to guide South African life.

“Anything which we do to develop his values is to keep him alive,” his widow Graça Machel had said last month.
