Honouring Nelson Mandela

Thousands from all over the country gathered to celebrate the legacy of the late State President Nelson Mandela.

Thousands of people from all over the country gathered at the Union Buildings on Saturday to celebrate Nelson Mandela’s legacy through the Unite4Mandela sports day.

The day started off with a 5km, 9,4km and 27km fun run, which was in honour if Mandela spending 27 years in prison and a 67km cycle ride, for the 67 years Mandela spent fighting for liberation.

The Department of Arts and Culture in partnership with the Department of Sport and Recreation were pleased with the attendance.

The event is part of the campaign, UNITE 2.0, One Man, One Nation, One Celebration in honour of the late former President Nelson Mandela’s unwavering commitment to justice, equality, non-racialism, nation-building and fight for social cohesion.

The minister of Sport, Fekile Mbalula, congratulated all the winners that took part in the race.

“You are all a bunch of winners, congratulations to you all.”

Many artists and celebrities also took part in the concert that was held after the race.
