Pretoria artists commemorated

Art lovers enjoy the opening of the Capital Past exhibition at Fried Gallery in Brooklyn.

In commemoration of Pretoria’s top artists, Fried Contemporary Art Gallery and Studio in Brooklyn is hosting a ‘Capital: Past’ exibition. The exhibition is presented in three parts or editions, the first of these kicked off on Saturday.

Mika Thoms, owner of the gallery said that the exhibition is all about artists who had a historic link to Pretoria. “Not a lot of people know that many artists are from Pretoria,” he said.

Thoms said the exhibition is a way to tip their hats to the artists, to show their respect and recognise their work.

“The second edition is about exhibiting works of professional artists who originally came from Pretoria but now live in other cities and do art for a living. The third edition is about looking at artists who live and work in Pretoria and are internationally known,” said Thoms.

Some of the artworks that were exhibited were loaned from the University of Pretoria as Fried works closely with them, and some are from private collections.

All exhibitions will be running for four weeks each and community members are welcome to visit the gallery during the week in their working hours.
