IAGT annual fun walk a success

Residents took part in the annual IAGT Fun Walk that also serves as a fundraiser for underprivileged women.

2 August 2014 marked the 4th annual It’s a Girl Thing (IAGT) fun walk. This year men, women and children alike supported the event. The first batch of just over a 200participantsleft the Bylsbridge Promenade at 07:30 for the 12km run, soon to be followed by a boisterous crowd of 800 plus for the 6km walk that kicked off at 08:00. This year Bright Smiles, Bright Future joined forces with IAGT and introduced Walk for a cause. This initiative afforded participants the opportunity to support the Bright Smiles, Bright Future NPO that acts as an umbrella organization for a variety of social outreaches to women, children and the elderly.

The IAGT annual fun walk has become an institution as precursor to the IAGT event of the year – the annual women’s conference. The fun walk serves as a fundraiser to sponsor underprivileged women from disadvantaged areas for the conference. The 2014 conference, themed The Palace, takes place from 5 – 6 September. In support of this special event, many of the fun walkers participated in a variety of crowns, tiaras and all sorts of princess attire. As an event hosted exclusively for women, the conference seeks to inspire, empower and encourage women of all walks of life to not only be rejuvenated and enriched as individuals, but also to reach out to those around them as individuals with the capacity to change the world.

The fun walk was sponsored by Virgin Active, Camdeboo Day Spa and Minuteman Press. Daniel Nkhumae (12km) and Christiaan Dlamini (6km)were the first men to enter the gates of the Bylsbridge Promenade, with the ladies Lelani Brits (12km) and Yolanda Meiring (6km), winners of the women’s race, following closely in their tracks. The first prizes for children went to Kgomotso Nkole and Irichia Kock. Liezelle Lategaan was the first ‘mom with a pram’ to conquer the 12km run in a spectacular time of just over 43 minutes. On a less serious note, the group competition categories were won by The Roman Princesses (best dressed), Epic (wackiest) and The Medieval Warriors (most spirited) who all celebrated The Palace theme in true princess style!

All-in-all the well-supported occasion provided just over a 1000 people with a fun-filled morning full of laughter, friends and great memories.
