Streets leading to Sunnyside from the Union Buildings and back were abuzz with festivity as Gauteng and local leadership participated in a parade as part of Heritage Day celebrations on Tuesday.
The morning saw crowds perform for the province’s top brass including Gauteng premier David Makhura, education MEC Panyaza Lesufi and arts, culture, sports and recreation MEC Mbali Hlophe.
In a brief conversation with the media, Makhura said heritage was “very important”.
“We celebrate many dimensions of our heritage – from what we are to what we aspire to be,” he said.
Makhura added, however, there was still a long way to go in building “the country of our dreams”.
The Gauteng Heritage carnival and festival was also aimed at creating unity in diversity.
The premier also took the opportunity to speak about the ongoing scourge of gender-based violence in the country.
“Every part of our culture where there is a problem with how women are treated must be dealt with because culture develops … it’s not static,” he said.
Makhura added that problems of racism also had to be dealt with as there was unity in diversity.
After the parade popular musicians such as Sho Madjozi, Busiswa, DJ Sumbody and Mlindo took to the stage to entertain festivalgoers in the afternoon.
